{"id":3590,"date":"2020-12-26T21:21:27","date_gmt":"2020-12-26T11:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/?p=3590"},"modified":"2021-03-11T11:28:45","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T01:28:45","slug":"possible-career-goals-for-software-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/2020\/12\/26\/possible-career-goals-for-software-developers\/","title":{"rendered":"Possible Career Goals for Software Developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/jvns.ca\/blog\/2018\/09\/30\/some-possible-career-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julia Evans's awesome blog post<\/a> on <strong>Possible Career Goals for A Software Developer<\/strong> and even though I am no longer a <a href=\"\/weblog\/category\/articles\/software-engineer-career-growth\/\">software developer<\/a<>, I thought I'd take a look back at my almost-20-years career and see how I did.  <\/p>\n<h3>technical goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>become an expert in a domain\/technology\/language <br \/> \u2705 I was a front-end and performance expert. <\/li>\n<li>get to a point where you can drop into new situations or technologies and quickly start making a big impact <br \/>\u2705 I worked as a contractor for about 4 years, and worked on pretty large projects.<\/li>\n<li>do research-y work \/ something that\u2019s never been done before <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e I don't think I have done this. <\/li>\n<li>satisfy your intellectual curiosity about something <br \/>\u2705 I am always exploring and picking up tech and ew way of doing things. <\/li>\n<li>get comfortable with really big codebases <br \/>\u2705 See above.<\/li>\n<li>work on a system that has X scale\/complexity (millions of requests per second, etc) <br \/>\u2705 Did that a few times by working for high-traffic and profolic websites and apps. <\/li>\n<li>scale a project way past its original design goals <br \/>\ud83d\udc4c I think so, although I am not sure.<\/li>\n<li>do work that saves the company a large amount of money <br \/>\u2705 I did a few things that brought in revenue. <\/li>\n<li>be an incident commander for an incident and run the postmortem <br \/>\u2705 If I were completely being honest, way more often than I'd have liked. <\/li>\n<li>make a contribution to an open source project \u2705<\/li>\n<li>get better at some skill (testing \/ debugging \/ a programming language \/ machine learning) <br \/>\u2705 I was a web developer and then a really good backend developer and then a front-end expert.<\/li>\n<li>become a core maintainer for an important OSS project <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e Haven't done that.<\/li>\n<li>build an important system from scratch <br \/>\u2705 I was lucky enough to do that a few times in my career. Right place, right time. <\/li>\n<li>be involved with a product\/project from start to end (over several years) <br \/>\u2705  Except for one or two jobs I had where I worked for an agency.<\/li>\n<li>understand how complex systems fail (and how to make them not fail) <br \/>\u2705 Yes, and I learned so much every time.<\/li>\n<li>be able to build prototypes quickly for new ideas <br \/>\u2705 This was my jam. I loved hackathons and bringing ideas to life. Actually, I still do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>job goals<\/h3>\n<p>You can check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eisabai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> for more information on my job history.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>get your first job  \u2705<\/li>\n<li>pass a programming interview  \u2705<\/li>\n<li>get your \u201cdream job\u201d (if you have one)  \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work at a prestigious company  \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work at a very small company  \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work at a company for a really long time (to see how things play out over time)  \u2705 So far, my record is 6 years. <\/li>\n<li>work at lots of different companies (to get lots of different perspectives) \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>get a raise \u2705<\/li>\n<li>become a manager \u2705<\/li>\n<li>get to a specific title (\u201carchitect\u201d, \u201csenior engineer\u201d, \u201cCTO\u201d, \u201cdeveloper evangelist\u201d, \u201cprincipal engineer\u201d) \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work at a nonprofit \/ company where you believe in the mission \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work on a product that your family \/ friends would recognize \u2705<\/li>\n<li>work in many different fields <br \/>\ud83d\udc4c I've always been in the tech industry, although in different sectors like agency, media, telco, startup, e-commerce and software. <\/li>\n<li>work in a specific field you care about (transit, security, government)  \u2705 See above. <\/li>\n<li>get paid to work on a specific project (eg the linux kernel)  \u2705 A special project for a news media.<\/li>\n<li>as an academic, have stable funding to work towards your research interests \ud83d\udc4e <\/li>\n<li>become a baker \/ work on something else entirely :) \ud83d\udc23 Does becoming a mom count? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>entrepreneurship goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>start freelancing  \u2705  I was freelancing on the side as I held a full-time job back in my developer days. <\/li>\n<li>start a consulting company  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>make your first sale of software you wrote  \u2705 It wasn't a software but a script. <\/li>\n<li>get VC funding \/ start a startup  \u2705  Founded a startup but no funding. <\/li>\n<li>get to X milestone with a company you started  \ud83d\udc4e Haven't done that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>product goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>do your work in a specific <em>way<\/em> that you care about (eg make websites that are accessible) <br \/>\u2705 Yes, delightful user experience (incl. accessibility & performance) was an area that I cared about so I put effort to make sure smaller things were done right, eg: adding smooth animation, optimising images, code splitting, etc. <\/li>\n<li>build tools for people who you work with directly (this can be so fun!!) <br \/>\ud83d\udc4c I built lots of tools but they were part of the role, so I don't think it really qualified. For example, I built a simple CMS and Competition winner picker so my product team could be more self-sufficient.  <\/li>\n<li>make a big difference to a system you care about (eg \u201cinternet security\u201d) <br \/>\u2705 I lead a few refactoring projects to ensure tech stack was up-to-date and more maintainable.<\/li>\n<li>do work that helps solve an important problem (climate change, etc) <br \/>\u2705 Underrepresented hiring, career growth for women in tech, education for disadvantaged childen<\/li>\n<li>work in a team\/project whose product affects more than a million people  <br \/>\u2705 I was lucky to work for profilic companies with good missions.<\/li>\n<li>work on a product that people love  <br \/>\u2705 See above. <\/li>\n<li>build developer tools <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e I built some Chrome tools for myself, but not for other developers. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>people\/leadership goals<\/h3>\n<p>As an <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/category\/articles\/software-development-manager\/\">engineering leader<\/a>, it's been a privilege for me to do all of the followings as part of my role. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>help new people on your team get started  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>help someone get a job\/opportunity that they wouldn\u2019t have had otherwise  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>mentor someone and see them get better over time  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>\u201cbe a blessing to others you wished someone else was to you\u201d  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>be a union organizer \/ promote fairness at work  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>build a more inclusive team \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>build a community that matters to people (via a meetup group or otherwise)  \u2705 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>communication \/ community goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>write a technical book <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e I have written a few <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/books\/\">books<\/a> but they are not programming books.<\/li>\n<li>give a talk (meetup, conference talk, keynote) <br \/>\u2705 I do <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/books\/\">speaking<\/a> engagements regularly. <\/li>\n<li>give a talk at a really prestigious conference \/ in front of people you respect <br \/>\u2705  See above.<\/li>\n<li>give a workshop on something you know really well <br \/>\u2705 Given a few workshops on career development, especially for Women in Tech.<\/li>\n<li>start a conference <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e Haven't done that.<\/li>\n<li>write a popular blog \/ an article that gets upvoted a lot \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>teach a class (eg at a high school \/ college) <br \/>\ud83d\udc4e Haven't done that.<\/li>\n<li>change the way folks in the industry think about something (eg blameless postmortems, fairness in machine learning) <br \/>\u2705 <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/category\/articles\/women-in-tech\/\">Women in tech and in leadership<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>work environment goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>get flexible hours \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>work remotely  <br \/>\u2705  No thanks to Covid-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/2020\/09\/05\/a-week-of-working-from-home-and-homeschooling-as-an-engineering-manager-and-a-mom\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">4Ls Retrospective Of Working From Home and Homeschooling as an Engineering Manager and a Mom<\/a><\/li>\n<li>get your own office  <br \/>\u2705 My home office <\/li>\n<li>work in a place where you feel accepted\/included  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>work with people who share your values (this involves knowing what your values are! :) ) \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>work with people who are very experienced \/ skilled  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>have good health insurance \/ benefits  \u2705 <\/li>\n<li>make X amount of money  \u2705 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>other goals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>remain as curious and in love with programming as the first time I did it  <br \/>\ud83d\udc4c I still love programming (or building stuff using code) but I don't do that often anymore.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was a good exercise for me to do this because I often feel that I am not doing enough in my career; there is always something more that I could be doing.  Recently, when I took a look back at 2020, I had so many <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/2020\/12\/19\/my-fail-list-of-2020\/\">failures<\/a>, not as many <a href=\"https:\/\/eisabainyo.net\/weblog\/2020\/12\/23\/my-success-list-2020\/\">successes<\/a>. Bill Gates was right, \"Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.\"<\/p>\n<p>So my takeaway is to keep going and keep taking action.
