I have always wanted to know what the most popular search engines are and I finally get the answer via a link from Techcrunch today. According to comScore Press Release, for the month of April 07, Google is in the lead with 49.7%, followed by Yahoo! with 26.8%, Microsoft with 10.3%, and Ask Network with 5.1%.

Sproose - Human Powered Search

Sproose - Social Search

Sproose is a human powered search engine, which, in their own words, provides user generated search results to give the power of search ranking to you, the user.

I tried searching for a few keywords, and the search result is very similar to that of google except that they are sorted by votes, i.e: a website with the most number of votes appear first. Therefore, you would appreciate the search engine more if you are looking for some of the most common search terms of which many people have already searched for and voted.

The design is not too inviting nor appealing and I think they will get more exposure and users if the design was more compelling.

Technorati Redesign

Technorati

Technorati has been redesigned with color scheme of green and yellow in less than a year. Not only it has been redesigned, new functionalities have also been added and some old ones have been eliminated. In their own words:

First, we’ve eliminated search silos on Technorati. In the past, you had to know the difference between keyword search, tag search and blog directory search in order to make use of the full power of our site. No more. Starting today, we now provide you a simplified experience.

With this launch, we also provide you with more context around more stuff like videos, music, and blogs. Over time, these pages will become richer and more comprehensive as we add more information about the thing itself, like where it was published, who links to it, what other things are similarly tagged, and more.

A screenshot of their old design can be found here.

alpha (beta) search

The web is so large
Almost boundless in its scope
Emphasis: “Almost”

- A No-Results-Found message by alpha (beta) search

alpha (beta)Yahoo!7 (An Australian and New Zealand Yahoo!) has released a web 2.0 aggregated search engine called alpha. I know what you are thinking, because I was thinking the same thing too; Yahoo! has already got a search engine which is one of the most commonly used in the world, so why alpha (beta) gamma search?

The difference here is that alpha (beta) search is an aggregated search in web 2.0 style, and it categories results from various sources into different sections; the default ones being Yahoo!7 Web Search, Flickr, Yahoo!7 Answers, YouTube, Yahoo!7 News, and Wikipedia. If you are logged in to your Yahoo! account, you can customise the search result page by dragging and dropping modules (source elements) and also add your custom info sources (i.e: any website you would like to search) if they use OpenSearch RSS.

I haven’t heard of OpenSearch RSS before, so I did some research on the Internet, and discovered that the following websites offer OpenSearch RSS.

You can learn how to add OpenSearch RSS to your website or blog from alpha (beta) FAQ if you are interested.
